HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its weekly award winners for men’s basketball this afternoon with Dartmouth point guard Taurus Samuels being named the Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Big Green’s 81-63 victory against Harvard in the conference opener on Saturday night.

A 6-0, 175-pound native of Oceanside, California, Samuels proved to be a terrific catalyst off the bench. He first entered the game with Dartmouth clinging to a 20-19 lead in the first half and assisted on a pair of buckets during a 19-5 run as the Big Green ballooned the lead to 15 by halftime. In the second half, he once again took the floor with about eight minutes left and played all but 15 seconds the rest of the game, providing two layups, two free throws and two rebounds along with an assist and a blocked shot to ensure Dartmouth closed out the win.

Samuels finished the night with six points, three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal without a turnover in 13 minutes of action.

Dartmouth (10-7, 1-0 Ivy), which won its Ivy League opener for the first time in 12 years, won’t take to the hardwood again until Jan. 26 for the return game at Harvard (6-7, 0-1 Ivy), the preseason favorite to win the conference crown. The game will be telecast on NESN and streamed live on ESPN+ at 2 p.m.

Notes: The last Big Green player to earn the league’s Rookie of the Week award was Chris Knight on Dec. 11, 2017 … Dartmouth shot 68.1 percent from the floor for the game, its highest in at least 23 years … all eight players that saw action hit more than half of their field goal attempts … the 18-point margin of victory was Dartmouth’s largest against Harvard in 20 years … the win was also just the fourth for the Big Green over the Crimson in the last 11 seasons (21 games), though they still lead the all-time series, 97-90.
