NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Dartmouth was handed a pair of 5-4 defeats to Cal Poly and Cal Baptist Saturday on day two of the CSUN/LMU Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Big Green drop to 2-12, while Cal Poly improves to 6-20 and Cal Baptist is now 12-14 on the season.
Vs. Cal Poly
Dartmouth struck first, but runs by Cal Poly in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings were enough for the Mustangs to hand the Big Green a 5-4 defeat in game one on Saturday.
Dartmouth had seven hits compared to four for the Mustangs. Billie McFadyen and Micah Schroder each hit home runs for the Big Green, while Schae Nelson drove in a run with a triple.
With one out in the bottom of the first, McFadyen put Dartmouth on top with her first career home run, clearing the right field fence to make it a 1-0 Big Green advantage after the first inning.
Cal Poly tied the game at one in the second when Crimson Kaiser hit a solo shot of her own to lead off the inning. The Mustangs then took a 2-1 lead in the third. Noellah Ramos laced a leadoff triple and scored on a Big Green error to make it 2-1, Cal Poly.
Two more Cal Poly runs scored in the fourth on an RBI bunt single and a wild pitch. The Mustangs extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth when a run scored on a sacrifice fly.
Madie Augusto came out of the bullpen in the fifth and went the final three innings in the circle where she did not allow a hit. Dartmouth started its comeback attempt in the sixth. After Morgan Martinelli doubled to left field, Schroder launched a deep ball over the center field fence to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Loghan Thomas started the bottom of the seventh with a base hit and was pinch ran for by Emily Lipsett. With one out, Nelson sent a rocket down the left field line, scoring Lipsett and making it a one run game. Cal Poly brought in its closer for the final two outs and forced Dartmouth to strand the tying run on third base.
Vs. Cal Baptist
Despite out-hitting Cal Baptist, 12-6, the Lancers won on a walk off sacrifice fly to take down the Big Green, 5-4 in game two. Morgan Martinelli went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI base hit, while Calista Almer, Billie McFadyen and Tatyanah Castillo all had multi-hit games.
The Big Green got on the board first for the second straight game. Almer singled to start the first, advanced to second on an error and went to third base on a groundout. Small ball then came into play as Martinelli dropped a perfect bunt where she was safe for an RBI single to put Dartmouth on top, 1-0, at the end of one.
Cal Baptist took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when all three runs scored on a costly error. Dartmouth tied it right back up at three in the fourth when McKenna Gray singled and Castillo doubled, putting runners on second and third. McFadyen followed that up with a double to left center to bring in both runs.
Bryce West began the fifth with a base knock and eventually made her way to third base with one out. Castillo then brought in West with an RBI groundout to put the Big Green on top, 4-3. The Mustangs got the run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to knot the game at four.
With the score still tied going into the bottom of the seventh, Cal Poly got a base hit and advanced its runner to third with one out. Amanda Agromaniz scored the winning run from third with a walk off sacrifice fly to center field.
The Big Green head to Loyola Marymount on Sunday for a single game against the Lions to wrap up its spring break trip. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
