HANOVER, N.H. — Athlon Sports announced its 2019 Preseason FCS All-America Team this morning with Dartmouth cornerback Isiah Swann among the players listed. Swann was a consensus All-American and the Bushnell Cup winner as the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year last fall as a junior after leading all of Division I (both FBS and FCS) with nine interceptions.
The lone Ivy Leaguer to earn a spot on the Athlon’s preseason squad, Swann enters his senior year with 13 interceptions — tied for the program career record — and 21 pass breakups, not to mention 110 tackles with two for a loss and one sack. The 6-0, 190-pound native of Queen Creek, Arizona, set the program record with his nine picks last year (one of which he returned for a touchdown), plus broke up nine other throws, recorded 39 tackles and recovered a fumble.
After being named a first-team FCS All-American by seven different organizations, including the Associated Press, STATS and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Swann finished fifth in the Buck Buchanan Award voting for the nation’s top defensive player. He was also selected for the Division I All-New England Team and earned the STATS National Defensive Player of the Week award after snaring three interceptions in a win at Holy Cross.
Dartmouth will be seeking its 19th Ivy League title this fall after being ranked 15th in the nation last year in the final coaches poll while finishing second in the conference standings with a 6-1 mark to go with a 9-1 overall record. The Big Green, which have won 13 consecutive non-conference games (their longest since the Ivy League was formed), open the season at Jacksonville on Sept. 22 with kickoff tentatively slated for 1 p.m.
