HANOVER, N.H. â€” The Dartmouth Athletics department today announced the hiring of two individuals to its compliance office. Tiffani-Dawn Sykes will serve as the associate athletics director for compliance, while Joseph Arnold will fill the role of assistant athletics director for compliance.
Sykes comes to Dartmouth with nine years of experience in compliance and 17 years in college athletics. Most recently, she served as the assistant athletics director for compliance at Grambling State in Louisiana since April of 2017, overseeing the day-to-day responsibilities of the department’s compliance program, including monitoring, education and certification. She also had sport responsibilities as the supervisor for the baseball, softball and women’s tennis teams, plus created “The Maul,” a fueling station for all GSU student-athletes.
Sykes has also spent time at Norfolk State for four years as an NCAA eligibility specialist and Chowan University in North Carolina for three years as the director of NCAA compliance. She began her career in college athletics in 2002 at Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia, in sports information and took on the role of the Senior Woman Administrator during her four years there. Other stops include Virginia Union University, an initial stay at Grambling State during which time she earned her master’s degree in sport administration, and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference office.
A 2001 graduate of Virginia State with a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, recreation and dance, Sykes was a team captain and four-year starter for the Trojans’ volleyball team as well as a three-year letter winner on the track and field team. She is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC), Women Leaders in College Sports and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association.
Arnold has worked in collegiate compliance for the past nine years as well, most recently at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, since July of 2017. Among his duties as the assistant athletic director for compliance were being responsible for all incoming initial and transfer student-athletes, camps and clinics and maintaining information on prospective student-athletes regarding the NCAA Eligibility Center, assisting in the certification for practice, competition and athletic aid, and serving as a liaison to admissions and financial aid. He also had sport responsibilities as the supervisor for the men’s and women’s golf teams, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.
Prior to his stint at UIW, Arnold was the associate athletic director for compliance at Mississippi Valley State, the assistant director of compliance and compliance coordinator at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, and a compliance intern at his alma mater, the University of Alabama Birmingham. His initial exposure to compliance came with an internship at the Southwestern Athletic Conference office in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2008.
Arnold graduated from UAB with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and minors in chemistry and health eduction in 2008. He was a co-captain of the Blazer football team and two-time letter winner. In 2013, he earned his master’s of sports science in sport management with emphasis in NCAA compliance from the United States Sports Academy. Like Sykes, Arnold is a member of the NAAC as well as Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
