Just over 30 years ago, on July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities. The ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities, reducing barriers, changing perceptions and increasing full participation in many aspects of living, learning and working.

The University of Hawaiʻi would like to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this key moment in history and recognize the progress made since 1990 by reaffirming the principles of equality and inclusion and recommitting our efforts to be ADA compliant.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual awareness campaign established 75 years ago, with this year’s theme being “Increasing Access and Opportunity.” Throughout the next few months, all ten UH campuses will be engaging in activities that may include education and awareness on disability employment issues and our commitment to inclusive work culture.

We want to spread the important message that we value all perspectives and contributions, including those of individuals with disabilities. We invite you to take a few moments and indicate your disability and/or veteran status in this simple two-question survey using your UH login below: https://www.hawaii.edu/offices/eeo/veteran-disability-survey/.

This information will be confidential and submitted directly to the EEO/AA officer. It will be used only for federal reporting purposes and will not affect your current employment. Your participation is strictly voluntary.

If you would like more information on the ADA or request a reasonable accommodation at work, please contact the ADA coordinator at your campus. For further information, please refer to the following link: http://www.hawaii.edu/offices/eeo/ada-504-coordinators/.

Thank you for your support of this important campaign celebrating the 30th Anniversary of ADA and 75th Anniversary of NDEAM.

Aloha,

David Lassner
UH President
