Career Networking for Beginners and More: Introducing Community Circles
Endless questions pave the road between college and career for soon-to-graduate seniors:
- “The ad says ‘entry level,’ but the job requires experience; how do I get experience?”
- “The application says ‘provide references’ . . . will any name do?”
- “I’m such an introvert, the thought of networking makes me sick. Where do I begin?”
“Begin here,” says Kelli Pryor, (at left) coordinator of career services at Greenville University.
An enthusiastic advocate for GU’s newly formed Community Circles, Pryor describes the group of alumni professionals as friendly and ready to help students transition into the work world.
Community Circles—a collaborative effort between Greenville University’s Office of Career Services and Office of Alumni Relations—connects students with alumni and fosters relationships that focus on career readiness and vocation.
Students benefit from career mentoring, internship opportunities, job shadowing, job leads, networking, and more. With help from alumni, they unravel the mysteries of:
- developing resumes and LinkedIn profiles,
- preparing for interviews and presentations,
- pursuing internships and job opportunities,
- developing valuable professional and life skills, and more.
Great Opportunity Times Two
“This is a great opportunity for students,” said Pryor. “And it’s easy. They just contact me, and I will help them take the first step.”
Dewayne Neeley, GU’s director of alumni relations (at right), thinks Community Circles is a great opportunity for alumni as well by giving them a tangible way to support up and coming members of the workforce.
“GU alumni significantly impact many professional areas,” he says. “Now, they can combine their field expertise, professional networks, and eye for industry needs with their love for GU and helping today’s students (tomorrow’s alumni) succeed.”
